Alternaria

Typically found indoors on food stuffs, on textiles, in house dust and dead organic debris, in carpets, on horizontal surfaces and window frames. Outdoors, it may be isolated from samples of soil, seeds and plants, and is frequently reported in air.

Aspergullis

Typically found in soil, decaying plant debris, compost piles and stored grain. They are frequently isolated from forest products, nuts, cotton, and water damaged building materials. Spores can also be found in moist ventilation systems and house dust.

Candida

This fungus is naturally found on leaves, flowers, water, organic debris and in soils. Also part of the normal flora of mouth and other mucous membranes in the human body.

Fusarium

Many species of this fungus are important plant pathogens. Commonly found in soil, plants, grains, and often in humidifiers.

Helminthosporium

Natural habitat includes dead stems of herbaceous plants, and twigs and branches of many different kinds of trees. Located in warmer southern states and temperate zones. Also found in St Augustine Grass.

Hormodendrum

A plant pathogen typically found in soils of many different types, dead plants, woody plants, food, straw, soil, paint, and textiles. It is the dark brown mold that grows around the edge of the bath or shower stall or even on the ceiling in bathrooms.

Mucor

Often found in soils, dead plant material (hay), horse dung, fruits and fruit juice. It is also found in leather, meat, dairy products, animal hair, and jute. It is almost always in house dust, frequently in air samples and old dirty carpets, and is also the black mold commonly found on bread.

Penicillium

Famous for its antibiotic properties, it is commonly found in soil, food, cellulose and grains. It is also found in paint and compost piles. A common indoor mold often found in musty basements, in carpet, on wallpaper, and in interior fiberglass duct insulation.

Pullularia

Common in a variety of soils outdoors. It is widespread in the indoor environment and is common in places that moisture accumulates like bathrooms, kitchens, shower curtains, tile grout, and windowsills.
